I saw the trailer for Captain America: Civil War this morning. The visuals are stunning. The fight scene between Iron Man, Bucky, and Cap, while the two of them pass Cap’s shield back and forth, was thrilling. Ditto every shot of Falcon in action.

But…

Starting at around 0:43, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross tells Cap that some people see him as a vigilante. “You’ve operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That’s something the world can no longer tolerate.” Because we know Cap is the good guy, we’re supposed to feel bad about that, I guess. But if I lived in a world where gods walked the earth, I would damn sure want there to be some oversight of all of them, regardless of what side they claimed to be on. Tony Stark seems to agree when he tells Cap, “If we can’t accept limitations, we’re no better than the bad guys.”

Cap responds, “That’s not the way I see it.”

The implication is that Cap thinks he should not have to answer to anyone for his actions.

Now, maybe the trailer misrepresents what’s going on. (I had a similarly negative reaction to the trailer for Captain America: Winter Soldier, and the film was nothing like what I expected.) I hope that’s the case. Because in the real world, we have a real problem with cops acting as if they are above the law. I’m not happy with the idea of Captain America seeming to adopt the same position.
